Founded in 1981 by Robert Redford, the Sundance Film Festival is the largest independent film festival in the United States. The event is dedicated to the art of independent storytelling, and it is produced by the Sundance Institute®, a nonprofit organization that provides and preserves creative space for artists in film, theatre and new media. The Sundance Film Festival has introduced global audiences to notable works, including Jordan Peele’s Get Out, John Cameron Mitchell’s Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs, among many others. The institute continues to set new standards for supporting provocative and thoughtful motion picture development.

Tribeca Film Festival

The Tribeca Film Festival was created to help spur the economic and cultural revitalization of lower Manhattan following the attacks on the World Trade Center. The event was founded by Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff in 2001. It aims to bring artists and audiences together to celebrate storytelling in all its forms, including film, TV, VR, gaming, music and online work. With its roots in independent film, the festival highlights the strength of the New York City art scene and its dedication to supporting the next generation of filmmakers.

Fantastic Fest

Fantastic Fest has a cult following for good reason. It was founded in 2005 by Alamo Drafthouse founders Tim and Karrie League, Ain’t It Cool News founder Harry Knowles, producer Paul Alvarado-Dykstra and writer/director Tim McCanlies. The event is the largest genre film festival in the United States specializing in horror, fantasy, sci-fi and action films from around the world. With secret screenings and costume-encouraged themed parties, the festival offers a one-of-a-kind movie-going experience. Organizers do a great job of sourcing and spotlighting lesser-known projects, as well as films with unusual provenances in an effort to expand views’ general knowledge and appreciation of cinema.

AFI Fest

AFI Fest offers the perfect combination: Hollywood and the American Film Institute (AFI), an organization dedicated to documenting, archiving and celebrating motion picture history. AFI Fest showcases the best festival films of the year and provides a stage for seasoned filmmakers and emerging artists to come together to discuss their process, passion and inspiration. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recognizes AFI Fest as a qualifying festival for the Short Films category for the annual Academy Awards®. Virtual Tour of the Getty Villa

About the Getty Villa
In 1968, businessman and philanthropist J. Paul Getty (1892–1976) began plans to build a Roman-style villa near Malibu to serve as a museum. Six years later, the new museum opened to the public and quickly became a cultural landmark. The Getty Villa houses the J. Paul Getty Museum’s extensive collection of antiquities, including 44,000+ objects of which roughly 1,300 are on view. The museum has 27 galleries organized by time period from the Neolithic Era to the late Roman Empire (ca. 6,500 BC to 400 AD).

Highlights from the permanent collection include Neolithic clay figurines dating back to the sixth millennium BC, marble vessels and figurines from the Cycladic Islands and Cyprus dating back to the Bronze Age and a group of frescoes from the Villa of Numerius Popidius Florus at Boscoreale near Pompeii dating back to the first century AD. Two galleries are devoted to Roman sculpture and feature a number of life-size and larger Roman works, including the Statue of a Female Figure, a life-size bronze eagle, several portrait busts and three cornice blocks from a first-century BC building in Rome.

The Etruscan gallery features sculptures, vases, bronze statuettes and carved amber. Additional galleries are devoted to Athenian pottery, a special strength of the collection, and Greek works from southern Italy and Sicily, including a remarkable terracotta group from 350–300 BC. The Getty’s collection of Roman gold and silver vessels, figurines and jewelry are displayed in the Roman Treasury, along with engraved gems and Roman gold coins on loan from private collections.

The Getty Villa underwent a major upgrade and reinstallation of its antiquities collection in 2017/18. The gallery space was increased by 3,000 square feet to accommodate a number of large objects previously kept in storage. The reinstallation featured a newly renovated gallery on the first floor dedicated to the age of Alexander the Great and the Hellenistic World (336–30 BC). The centerpiece of this installation is the Victorious Youth, also known as the Getty Bronze. Other notable objects of the same period and style accompany the statue, including a marble head of Alexander the Great.

The museum’s grounds offer four gardens that blend together 300+ plant varieties, Roman architecture and open-air spaces. The largest garden, Outer Peristyle, is a replica of the one at the Villa dei Papiri with a long pool at the center. The landscaping features plants typically found near the Mediterranean, such as apricot trees, grapevines and lavender. Visitors can stroll around the fragrant gardens while enjoying mosaic floors and colorful trompe l’oeil walls. The grounds also include a dramatic 450-seat outdoor classical theater perfect for hosting open-air performances.

Day One

Morning – Cycle across the Golden Gate Bridge

Start your day with a bike ride across the Golden Gate Bridge, a stunning Art Deco suspension bridge from 1937. You can rent a bicycle at Get Your Guide in Fisherman’s Wharf. The bridge cradles the 101 highway that connects San Francisco to Marin County. It’s an iconic structure that offers incredible views of a fog-covered city. The bike ride takes approximately three hours, depending on your pace. Once across the bridge, descend into the quaint town of Sausalito. Spend some time walking around before taking the ferry (with your bicycle) back to San Francisco.

Afternoon – Get a taste of the local food 

Once you’re back in San Francisco, spend some time exploring the Ferry Building, which offers gourmet goodies from several independently-owned vendors. Visitors can enjoy fresh oysters from Hog Island Oyster Company, artisan bread from Acme Bread Company and micro-roasted coffee from Blue Bottle Coffee. It’s the perfect spot for snacking your way through lunch. The building has served as the central hub for ferryboat transportation in the Bay Area since it opened in 1898. Today, ferry services take passengers to Larkspur, Sausalito, Vallejo and Alameda.

Evening – Explore the Mission District

The Mission District is a lively neighborhood known for its live music venues and cocktail lounges. For decades, the Mission has been the center of the Latino community in San Francisco. Visitors can walk along narrow streets with colorful street art and shop for antiques and second-hand goods. It’s also home to some of the city’s best bars and restaurants, including local favorites like Delfina and Tacolicious.

Day Two

Morning – Take a stroll in Golden Gate Park

Start your day with a stroll through Golden Gate Park, a spacious urban oasis that is 20% larger than New York’s Central Park. This green slice of heaven is bookended by the Haight Asbury to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west. A visit to the park can be a peaceful way to start your second day. From rollerskating troops to Tai Chi masters, the park is filled with many interesting sights and sounds.

The de Young Museum, located towards the park’s eastern end, offers one of the best art collections west of the Mississippi River. The building, which reopened in 2005, was designed by Swiss architects Herzog and De Meuron. Its facade consists of perforated copper, which will continue to change in color as it oxidizes over time. Check out the de Young’s ninth-floor observatory to see how perfectly the structure blends in with its surroundings. This unique vantage point can be accessed for free and offers one-of-a-kind views of the park and outlying neighborhoods. Before you leave the park, take a walk through the Botanical Gardens and the Japanese Tea Gardens.

Afternoon – Ride on a cable car through Chinatown

Make your way downtown to explore Chinatown, the home of the fortune cookie. From there, hop on a cable car and end up in Fisherman’s Wharf for some world-class chocolate at Ghirardelli Square and one-of-a-kind sourdough bread at Boudin Bakery. Then, finish the day with an Irish coffee at Buena Vista.

Evening – Experience the opera

San Francisco has had a love affair with opera for more than 150 years. Between 1851 and the earthquake of 1906, nearly 5,000 opera performances were given in San Francisco at 26 different theaters. San Francisco Opera, near Civic Center, offers top-notch performances and beautiful architecture. Be sure to book your tickets in advance, since many performances sell out quickly.

Incorporated in 1837, Chicago is an American boomtown. Its population of roughly 30,000 residents in 1850 grew to more than 2 million by 1910. This influx of people brought with them a diverse mix of cultures, religions and beliefs. Illinois’ largest city sits on the southern shores of Lake Michigan, one of North America’s Great Lakes. Similar to Manhattan, many of Chicago’s early skyscrapers date back to the 1890s, which gives the city a rich architectural skyline. Chicago’s Second City, located in Oldtown, offers nightly performances and seasonal shows featuring some of the most talented comedians in the business. The comedy club has been operating as a theatre and improv school since 1959. Throughout the years, company alumni have included many of comedy’s greatest heroes, including Bill Murray, John Candy, Chris Farley, Amy Poehler and Aidy Bryant. After the show, grab a drink at 1959 Kitchen & Bar, the club’s on-site restaurant, or the neighboring Old Town Ale House.

Experience baseball history

Chicagoans are crazy about baseball. In a city with two Major League teams, visitors will need to pick a side. If you choose the Cubs, you will not be disappointed with a visit to the historic Wrigley Field on the North Side of Chicago. Built in 1914, the stadium is the second-oldest ballpark in Major League Baseball, just behind Boston’s Fenway Park (1912). Baseball memorabilia is on full view throughout the stadium, including the original scoreboard from 1937. Depending on the location of your seat, you might just get lucky with a game ball souvenir. To increase your chances of catching a game ball, sit along the first and third base lines for foul balls and in the bleachers for home-run balls. Don’t forget to try a Chicago-style hotdog, which is typically topped with mustard, relish, onion, tomato, pickle, peppers and celery salt. Stadium tours are available during the offseason.

Cruise on the Chicago River

The architecture boat tour is a great introduction to the Chicago skyline. Many of the city’s most stunning buildings can be enjoyed from the top deck of the First Lady. The tour highlights many important architectural styles, including Chicago School, neoclassical, art deco and modern. The 90-minute excursions are expertly hosted by docents from the Chicago Architecture Center, and tours operate from mid-May to mid-October. For an unforgettable experience, check out the twilight tours, which offer beautiful sunset views from the Chicago River. The vessels can carry up to 250 passengers and feature open-air upper decks, full-service bars, climate-controlled lower cabins and upscale marble and granite restrooms. It is advised to purchase tickets in advance.

The Art Institute of Chicago is one of the world’s leading art museums. Centrally located in Grant Park, the Art Institute offers visitors notable works from around the world. Its permanent collection features more than 300,000 pieces, including Seurat’s A Sunday on La Grande Jatte (1884/86), Van Gogh’s The Bedroom (1889), Wood’s American Gothic (1930), Hopper’s Nighthawks (1942) and Motley’s Nightlife (1943), among many others. Unwind to the sound of live jazz

Chicago has jazz roots that date back to the 1920s when Jelly Roll Morton and Louis Armstrong were drawing large crowds. Today, music fans can visit Green Mill in Uptown for live jazz every night until 4am, except for Saturdays when it’s open until 5am. Known as one of the oldest continuously running jazz clubs in the country, Green Mill has welcomed jazz legends like Von Freeman, Franz Jackson and Wilbur Campbell. Seating is first-come, first-serve, and entrance fees vary depending on the band.

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day

Given the large Irish-American population, Chicago is the best place to be for celebrating St. Patrick’s Day. Each year, revelers take to the streets and flood neighborhood Irish bars wearing their best green-colored outfits. For five hours, typically starting at 9am on the Saturday prior to St. Patrick’s Day in March, the Chicago River is dyed emerald green. Thousands of spectators gather along the scenic Riverwalk to see green water flowing through the city’s center. Chicago also hosts one of the largest St. Patrick’s Day parades in the country, which includes a three-hour procession with colorful floats, troops of Irish step dancers, marching bands and bagpipers.

Lincoln Park is a great way to spend an afternoon in Chicago, especially during the warmer summer months. This 1,200+ acre park is situated on the North Side of Chicago along Lake Michigan. Visitors can explore the Chicago History Museum, Lincoln Park Zoo, Theatre on the Lake, Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum and Lincoln Park Conservatory. There is something for everyone in this urban oasis, and many activities can be enjoyed for free. Chicago’s flourishing Theatre District, located in the Loop, features more than 200 theatres, including five Tony Award-Winning companies. Visitors can choose from a selection of world-class productions. Check out the district’s three Broadway In Chicago theatres: CIBC Theatre, James M. Nederlander Theatre and Cadillac Palace Theatre. With more than 100 breweries, Chicago is the perfect place to sample interesting craft beers. First-time visitors should check out Goose Island, a well-known Chicago-born brewery. Learn about the brewing process at Goose Island’s Fulton Street brewery and taproom, located in West Loop. Tours operate Thursday through Sunday, and advanced booking is recommended. Beer samples and a custom beer glass are included in the tour ticket price.

If you’re still thirsty, check out Lagunitas Brewing Company’s 300-seat taproom located in Douglas Park. Offering excellent beer, live music, food and tours Wednesday through Sunday, Lagunitas is the largest brewery in Illinois.

Obama Presidential Center is located in Jackson Park on Chicago’s South Side near the University of Chicago. BBQ Brisket in Dallas, Texas

Texas is known for its barbecue, and a visit to Dallas would not be complete without some slow-cooked smoky meat. Pecan Lodge, located in Deep Ellum, serves classics like brisket, beef ribs, pork ribs and hand-made sausage. For the most part, this family-owned restaurant operates on a first-come, first-serve basis. Lunch is an ideal time to visit, since a line usually forms around the corner before the restaurant even opens. And, the doors close once the barbecue is gone for the day.

Gumbo in New Orleans, Louisiana

Gumbo is the official state cuisine in Louisiana. This Creole dish is typically made using a dark roux, rich stock, shellfish and the Creole holy trinity (celery, bell peppers and onions). Depending on the recipe, okra or filé powder can be added as well. Commander’s Palace is a New Orleans landmark and has been serving up gumbo since 1893. Today, the kitchen is known for mixing modern cooking techniques with Haute Creole cuisine. Set in a large neighborhood mansion, the dining space exudes a quirky sense of Louisiana charm. Reservations are recommended and dress codes are enforced.

Key Lime Pie in Miami, Florida

Open from October to May, Joe’s Stone Crab in Miami has been serving fresh, locally sourced seafood to hungry crowds for more than 100 years. It’s not just about the stone crab though; Joe’s also makes an excellent Key lime pie. This sweet treat is a local specialty, which is named after Key limes – known for having yellow juice. The pie is typically made with Key lime juice, egg yolks and sweetened condensed milk in a graham cracker crust with a whipped cream topping.

Pastrami on Rye in New York City, New York

New York’s signature sandwich is pastrami on rye, which is made with sliced pastrami on rye bread with spicy brown mustard, and it’s served with a Kosher dill pickle. Visit Katz’s Delicatessen to experience the real deal. Located in Manhattan’s Lower East Side, this restaurant celebrated its 133th anniversary in 2021, so you know you’re in good hands. Fun fact: this diner was used as a film set in When Harry Met Sally… (1989) and served as the backdrop for one of Meg Ryan’s cheekiest scenes of all time.

According to the Maine Department of Marine Resources, more than 96 million pounds of lobsters were caught off the shores of Maine in 2020. Lobstering happens all year round, but peak season is between late June and late December. Becky’s Diner is a prime spot for sampling one of the best lobster rolls in New England. They make their rolls using 1/3 pound of fresh Maine lobster meat with shredded lettuce and mayo or a side of melted butter. Side dishes include french fries, coleslaw and a pickle spear.

Hot chicken is serves as an open-faced white bread sandwich with a hot, bone-in chicken and topped with a pickle. For an original version of this spicy dish, head over to Prince’s Hot Chicken. Thorton Prince, known as the father of Nashville’s hot chicken, perfected his chicken recipe almost 100 years ago. Today Prince’s great niece, Ms. Andre Prince Jeffries, continues the tradition of serving up the gold standard for hot chicken in the south.

Coney Dog in Detroit, Michigan

Detroit is passionate about the Coney Dog, an all-beef hot dog topped with bean-less chili, white onion and yellow mustard. There is an ongoing feud among locals about the best spot to get a Coney Dog: American Coney Island or Lafayette Coney Island. It is a rite of passage for visitors to compete in the Coney Challenge, which involves trying a Coney Dog at each location and deciding where your allegiance lies.

The Philly cheesesteak is one of Philadelphia’s most celebrated dishes. This indulgent sandwich is made using a long, crusty roll, or hoagie, filled with thinly sliced, sautéed beef, typically ribeye, with melted cheese. Philadelphia sits about 100 miles southwest of New York City and about 140 miles northeast of Washington D.C. at the confluence of the Delaware and Schuylkill Rivers. The Philadelphia Museum of Art is a legacy of the nation’s great Centennial Exhibition of 1876. In 1877, the museum opened to the public in Fairmount Park in what had served as the Centennial’s Fine Arts Pavilion, now known as Memorial Hall. In 1917, when the Benjamin Franklin Parkway was nearing its completion, the city approved the final design for a new facility and the museum’s main building opened its doors at its present location in 1928. Today, it has over 240,000 works, encompassing the departments of American art, contemporary art, costume and textiles, east and south Asian art, European decorative arts, European painting, the John G. Johnson Collection, the Rodin Museum, prints, drawings and photographs. Collection highlights include Thomas Eakins’ Portrait of Dr. Samuel D. Gross, Henry Ossawa’s The Annunciation, Vincent van Gogh’s Sunflowers, Paul Cézanne’s The Large Bathers, Pablo Picasso’s Three Musicians and Grace Kelly’s Wedding Dress.

Barnes Foundation

The Barnes Foundation is a nonprofit cultural and educational institution founded by Dr. Albert C. Barnes. It is home to one of the world’s greatest collections of modern European paintings. It also features African art, Native American ceramics, Pennsylvania German furniture, old master paintings, antiquities and decorative ironwork. Dr. Barnes arranged his collection in “ensembles,” creating unusual mixed-media groupings of objects from different cultures and time periods. Collection highlights include 181 works by Pierre-Auguste Renoir (the largest single group of the artist’s paintings in the world), 69 works by Paul Cézanne (the largest single group of the artist’s paintings in the world), 59 works by Henri Matisse, 46 works by Pablo Picasso and 16 works by Amedeo Modigliani. The collection also features works by Henri Rousseau, Georges Seurat, Vincent van Gogh, Peter Paul Rubens, Titian and Paolo Veronese.

The Philly cheesesteak is one of the city’s most celebrated dishes. The market also houses dozens of family-owned restaurants serving up a wide range of culinary treats with plenty of seating areas and takeaway options. In addition to fresh food, the food bazaar area features handmade crafts and locally-sourced goods. Don’t miss the roast pork sandwich at DiNic’s, doughnuts from Beiler’s and soft pretzels from Miller’s Twist.

Independence Hall

In 1776, the Founding Fathers gathered at Independence Hall to sign the Declaration of Independence inside the Assembly Room. 11 years later, representatives from 12 states returned to lay the framework for the United States Constitution. Today, this UNESCO World Heritage Site attracts visitors from around the world. A tour of the building takes visitors through the first-floor courtroom, the Assembly Room featuring George Washington’s “rising sun” chair and the West Wing featuring the actual inkstand used to sign the Declaration of Independence and an original draft of the Constitution. Independence Hall is part of Independence National Historic Park, which also includes the Liberty Bell Center, the President’s House, the Benjamin Franklin Museum, the National Constitution Center and more.

The Museum of the American Revolution uncovers the compelling stories about the diverse people and complex events that sparked America’s ongoing experiment in liberty, equality and self-government. Through the museum’s collection, galleries, theater experiences and interactive elements, visitors gain a deeper appreciation for how the United States came to be. Encompassing 118,000 square feet, the space holds an expansive collection of art, manuscripts and printed works from the nation’s Revolutionary Period. It also displays a range of objects gathered from and pertaining to the Revolutionary War, including British, French and American weapons used in battle and personal diaries written in camps.

Located on the Delaware River, Cherry Street Pier is a public area with a marketplace, art space, alfresco bar and café. This historic pier is located just south of Race Street Pier and offers excellent views of the river and the Benjamin Franklin Bridge. The indoor-outdoor space is open year-round. The space features artist studios housed in repurposed cargo shipping containers, and visitors can meet with the artists and view art-making demonstrations.

Spruce Street Harbor Park

Open during the summer, Spruce Street Harbor Park is a waterfront space with lots of colorful hammocks – perfect for unwinding after a long day of sightseeing. Food is served from converted shipping containers that line the boardwalk, and craft beer is served in a garden area. The park offers plenty of games and activities, such as bocce, shuffleboard and giant Jenga, as well as kayak and swan boat rentals. Once the sun sets, the park lights up with hundreds of multi-colored LED lights hanging down from the trees. Its summer event calendar features pop-up art markets, outdoor movie screenings and musical performances.

Paris Opera Ballet

The Australian Ballet

The Best Classic Hotels in New York City

The Plaza Hotel

It was once said, “nothing unimportant ever happens at the Plaza.” The luxury property opened its doors in 1907 at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Central Park South. The Plaza Hotel, a Fairmont property, features 282 guest rooms, including 102 suites, as well as a variety of dining options, such as Palm Court, Champagne Bar, Rose Club, the Plaza Food Hall and Todd English at the Plaza. From its original nineteenth century construction to its $450 million dollar restoration in 2008, the Plaza might just be the most classic hotel in the world. Since its debut, the Plaza has remained a New York City icon hosting world leaders, dignitaries and film industry titans, including Truman Capote, Elizabeth Taylor, Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich. It has also serviced as the film location for some of Hollywood’s biggest hits, including Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest (1959), Sydney Pollack’s The Way We Were (1973) and Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby (2013).

The Pierre, A Taj Hotel

The Pierre, a Taj Hotel, has been refining its signature charm since opening in 1930. Initially modeled after Versailles, architects Schultze and Weaver designed the 41-story hotel with many stately features, including neo-Georgian accents, checkered marble floors, a ballroom with grand staircases and a Rotunda with ornate murals hand-painted by American artist Edward Melcarth. The property’s 189 rooms and suites offer beautiful interiors, contemporary style and modern amenities. Located on the border of Midtown and the Upper East Side, directly across from Central Park, the Pierre is a cornerstone of New York glamour having hosted many high-profile fashion icons and film stars, including Coco Chanel, Karl Lagerfeld, Hubert de Givenchy, Audrey Hepburn, Yves Saint Laurent and Barbra Streisand.

Gramercy Park Hotel opened its doors in 1925, and a year later, Humphrey Bogart was married on the hotel’s rooftop terrace. Not long after that, a young John F. Kennedy lived in the hotel for several months and Babe Ruth became a regular at the hotel’s New York Bar. Later, high-profile musicians began passing through the lobby or staying for months at a time giving Gramercy Park Hotel its rock and roll edge. In the 1960s, the Rolling Stones resided there after their first American tour, and Bob Dylan, the Beatles, the Clash and Bob Marley were all known to spend time in the hotel. Over the years, the property remained much the same until art collector and real estate developer Aby Rosen took over. In 2006, he enlisted artist Julian Schnabel and architect John Pawson to renovate the space in a way that would maintain its unique history while giving it bold, modern flourishes. The renovation was extensive – the entire second floor of the lobby was removed to make way for 20-foot ceilings, and Schnabel designed or curated many of the furnishings, paintings and sculptures that fill the space today.

The Carlyle, A Rosewood Hotel

Named after British essayist Thomas Carlyle, the Carlyle, a Rosewood Hotel, has been a classic landmark on Madison Avenue and 76th Street since 1930. Located just one block from Central Park in the heart of Manhattan’s Upper East Side, the 35-story hotel has 190 guest rooms and is surrounded by galleries, designer boutiques and fine art museums. Every American president since Harry S. Truman has visited this iconic property. With its black and white marbled lobby and Art Deco motifs in the specialty suites, the Carlyle has been meticulously maintained to honor the design inspiration of its first decorator Dorothy Draper. Don’t miss the Café Carlyle, a New York City pillar of classic cabaret entertainment. Throughout the years, it has featured performances by legendary musicians like Bobby Short, Eartha Kitt, Elaine Stritch and Debbie Harry.

Waldorf Astoria New York

The Waldorf Astoria New York opened in 1893 at the present site of the Empire State Building. Thirty-eight years later, the hotel moved to its current Park Avenue location. Known as the premier property of the Waldorf Astoria brand, the hotel is considered the largest private interior landmark in New York City. Conrad Hilton once referred to the Waldorf Astoria New York as, “the greatest of them all.” The Waldorf Astoria New York, a Hilton hotel, is currently undergoing a multi-year renovation, which is set to feature restored public and event spaces, 350 new guest rooms and suites and 350 residences. The hotel is also set to restore its historic items, such as the Cole Porter piano, the John F. Kennedy rocking chair and the World’s Fair Clock Tower.

The Algonquin Hotel

The Algonquin Hotel, Autograph Collection by Marriott, is located on 44th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues. The hotel was opened in 1902 when a single room cost $2 dollars a night. Frank Case, the hotel’s first general manager, eventually bought the hotel and continued to run it until his death in 1946. In 1923, the hotel got its first resident cat, a tradition that continues today. From 1919 until 1929, the hotel served as a lunch spot for the Algonquin Round Table, a group of New York writers, critics and actors. Notable members included Harold Ross (The New Yorker editor), George Kaufman (playwright and director), Alexander Woollcott (critic and journalist) and Brock Pemberton (Broadway producer). The round table group gathered in the Pergola Room, now called the Oak Room, a legendary cabaret nightclub.

St. Regis New York

In 1904, the St. Regis New York was founded by John Jacob Astor IV, and in 1912, the hotel was inherited by Astor’s son, Victor Astor, after his untimely death during the sinking of the Titanic. St. Regis New York, now a Marriott property, overlooks Fifth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, and it was declared a New York City Landmark in 1988. From the richly decorated rooms and designer suites to the rooftop ballroom, every element of this flagship St. Regis property was carefully considered. Don’t miss the iconic King Cole Bar where bartender Fernand Petiot invented the nation’s first modern Bloody Mary in 1934, just a year after Prohibition ended. Notable residents have included Salvador Dalí, William Paley, Nikola Tesla and John Lennon.

The Ritz-Carlton New York

The Ritz-Carlton New York opened in 1911 and was the first of the brand to operate in the United States. According to the New Yorker, the Ritz-Carlton’s head chef, Louis Diat, invented vichyssoise during the summer of 1917. The original recipe was published in Diat’s book titled Cooking a La Ritz. Now, the 253-room Ritz-Carlton New York, Central Park is a Forbes Five-Star and AAA Five Diamond Hotel. Located in Midtown Manhattan, the hotel features dining spots like Contour, a gastro lounge and the Ritz-Carlton Club® Lounge.

Sherry-Netherland Hotel

Since opening in 1927, the Sherry-Netherland is located on the corner of Fifth Avenue and 59th Street at the entrance to Central Park. This classic New York City hotel was developed by Louis Sherry and Lucius Boomer and designed by Schultze & Weaver in a neo-Romanesque and Renaissance style. All accommodations feature high ceilings, marble bathrooms, with some featuring the original pedestal sinks with silver-plated faucets from the 1920s. Harry Cipriani, the hotel’s restaurant is a near duplicate of the famed Harry’s Bar in Venice, which re-opened in May 2007 after a $3 million renovation. The mural on the lobby’s ceiling was inspired by Raphael’s frescoes, the Loggetta of Cardinal Bibbiena, in the Vatican Palace. In 1989, the hotel was featured in the film New York Stories as the location for Francis Ford Coppola’s Life Without Zoe.

The New York EDITION

The New York EDITION, located on Madison Avenue in Manhattan’s Flatiron District, is situated in the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company Tower from 1909. The hotel features luxury boutique accommodations with 273 guest rooms and suites with excellent views of Madison Square Park and the Empire State Building. The Clocktower, a Michelin-starred restaurant by Chef Jason Atherton, can be found on the hotel’s second floor. The menu features modern cuisine with British influences.

How to Spend 48 Hours Exploring San Diego

Day One in San Diego

Morning at the Beach

Start your vacation with a relaxing trip to the beach. San Diego is divided into six beach regions, including Coronado, La Jolla, Mission Bay and Beaches, North County Coastal, South Bay and Point Loma, Harbor Island and Shelter Island. Generally speaking, you can’t really go wrong with any of them, and if time allows, its best to check out a few, since each one has its own unique vibe.

If you only have one day to play in the ocean, check out Coronado Beach. This area offers quintessential views of the coastline making it perfect for first-time visitors. Find a nice spot near the iconic Hotel del Coronado, which was featured in the 1959 classic film “Some Like It Hot” starring Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis. From swimming to surfing, there are plenty of family-friendly beach activities to keep busy. Take a break from the water with a stroll along Orange Avenue to explore the shops and restaurants. Then, stop for a pint of beer at Coronado Brewing Company. Coronado is also a popular stop on the Old Town Trolley Tour and can be accessed from downtown using the Coronado Ferry or a water taxi.

La Jolla Cove Beach is another excellent choice for enjoying the water, sand and sun in San Diego. La Jolla is a beautiful seaside village with relaxed high-end style. The surrounding area offers luxury shopping and plenty of fine dining options.

Afternoon Enjoying Fish Tacos

A trip to San Diego would not be complete without sampling the fish tacos. Inspired by Mexico’s Baja region, this dish is traditionally made using lightly-battered fish and corn tortillas topped with cabbage, fresh salsa, cream sauce and a lime wedge. Evening in the Gaslamp Quarter

Once home to San Diego’s red light district in the late 1800s, the Gaslamp Quarter is a historical section of downtown. Now, this neighborhood, covering 16 ½ blocks, offers more than 100 restaurants, 90 historic buildings, 40 bars and nightclubs and 100 retail shops, as well as theaters and art galleries. The Gaslamp Quarter is the perfect spot to enjoy an evening out on the town. You’ll find some of San Diego’s best restaurants in the Gaslamp Quarter. Also, Rustic Root is an excellent option for delicious food, specialty cocktails and a rooftop bar.

Day Two in San Diego

Morning in Balboa Park

Take a break from the beach with a trip to Balboa Park. This centrally located area features museums, galleries, performing arts venues and the San Diego Zoo. There are 17 museums in the park, including the San Diego Museum of Art, San Diego Air & Space Museum and San Diego Automotive Museum. The park also features the Spanish Village Art Center, a cluster of buildings and courtyards built in 1935 to resemble a Spanish-style town. Today, this area features studio and gallery spaces for more than 250 artists. Visitors can tour some of the art spaces, view art demonstrations and talk with local artists.

Afternoon Enjoying Local Beer 

Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens – Liberty Station celebrates the venue’s prior history as a U.S. Navy mess hall, while introducing new industrial and organic features. Known for having bold, flavorful and largely hop-centric beers, Stone Brewing has earned a global following of dedicated fans. Visitors should also spend some time in Old Town, one of San Diego’s oldest settled areas. Now, Old Town is home to Old Town San Diego State Historic Park and Presidio Park. Make sure to visit Old Town on an empty stomach, since this neighborhood is known for its authentic Mexican cuisine. Old Town restaurants offer plenty of delicious food and tequila-infused cocktails.
