The Mayflower journeyed onwards to Southampton for supplies, but after many delays, the journey was abandoned. Two months later, Captain Jones, along with 102 passengers and approximately 30 crew members, set sail from Plymouth on what William Bradford described as “a prosperous wind.” Today, this traditional English pub, with its quaint location and lovely views, offers patrons a chance to reflect on the passage to the “New World” over pints and food. The Blackfriar was designed by architect H. Fuller-Clark and artist Henry Poole, both proponents of the progressive arts and craft movement of the time. Visitors can still find Poole’s original jolly friars around the pub in the form of sculptures, mosaics and reliefs.

Originally located in the middle of the Elephant and Castle roundabout, the pub was popular among coach travelers passing through the area. Over time, the pub had been updated multiple times. The current building dates from 1966 as the result of a neighborhood transformation following the Blitz.

According to the pub, the modern-day Elephant and Castle made waves again in the early nineties when it became known for its connection with the neighboring club, Ministry of Sound. Elephant and Castle had become a popular after-party spot for club-goers on Sunday mornings. Well-known DJs Matt Jam Lamont, Mickey Simms and Justin Cantor would gather at Elephant and Castle making it ground zero for the UK Garage music scene.

According to the Grapes, a young Charles Dickens would visit his godfather in Limehouse and continued to frequent the neighborhood throughout his life. The Grapes appears, scarcely disguised, in the opening chapter of his novel titled Our Mutual Friend. A complete set of Dickens’ work can be found in the pub’s back parlor. Other notable writers, such as Oscar Wilde and Arthur Conan Doyle, were said to have frequented the Grapes. Notable artists, such as Francis Bacon and Edward Wolfe, lived on the same street, so it seems likely that they would have also stopped by the pub to wet their whistles.

The Best Classic Hotels in New York City

The Plaza Hotel

It was once said, “nothing unimportant ever happens at the Plaza.” The luxury property opened its doors in 1907 at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Central Park South. The Plaza Hotel, a Fairmont property, features 282 guest rooms, including 102 suites, as well as a variety of dining options, such as Palm Court, Champagne Bar, Rose Club, the Plaza Food Hall and Todd English at the Plaza. From its original nineteenth century construction to its $450 million dollar restoration in 2008, the Plaza might just be the most classic hotel in the world. Since its debut, the Plaza has remained a New York City icon hosting world leaders, dignitaries and film industry titans, including Truman Capote, Elizabeth Taylor, Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich. It has also serviced as the film location for some of Hollywood’s biggest hits, including Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest (1959), Sydney Pollack’s The Way We Were (1973) and Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby (2013).

The Pierre, a Taj Hotel, has been refining its signature charm since opening in 1930. Initially modeled after Versailles, architects Schultze and Weaver designed the 41-story hotel with many stately features, including neo-Georgian accents, checkered marble floors, a ballroom with grand staircases and a Rotunda with ornate murals hand-painted by American artist Edward Melcarth. The property’s 189 rooms and suites offer beautiful interiors, contemporary style and modern amenities. Gramercy Park Hotel opened its doors in 1925, and a year later, Humphrey Bogart was married on the hotel’s rooftop terrace. Not long after that, a young John F. Kennedy lived in the hotel for several months and Babe Ruth became a regular at the hotel’s New York Bar. Later, high-profile musicians began passing through the lobby or staying for months at a time giving Gramercy Park Hotel its rock and roll edge. In the 1960s, the Rolling Stones resided there after their first American tour, and Bob Dylan, the Beatles, the Clash and Bob Marley were all known to spend time in the hotel. Over the years, the property remained much the same until art collector and real estate developer Aby Rosen took over. In 2006, he enlisted artist Julian Schnabel and architect John Pawson to renovate the space in a way that would maintain its unique history while giving it bold, modern flourishes. The renovation was extensive – the entire second floor of the lobby was removed to make way for 20-foot ceilings, and Schnabel designed or curated many of the furnishings, paintings and sculptures that fill the space today.

Named after British essayist Thomas Carlyle, the Carlyle, a Rosewood Hotel, has been a classic landmark on Madison Avenue and 76th Street since 1930. Located just one block from Central Park in the heart of Manhattan’s Upper East Side, the 35-story hotel has 190 guest rooms and is surrounded by galleries, designer boutiques and fine art museums. Every American president since Harry S. Truman has visited this iconic property. With its black and white marbled lobby and Art Deco motifs in the specialty suites, the Carlyle has been meticulously maintained to honor the design inspiration of its first decorator Dorothy Draper. Known as the premier property of the Waldorf Astoria brand, the hotel is considered the largest private interior landmark in New York City. Conrad Hilton once referred to the Waldorf Astoria New York as, “the greatest of them all.” The Waldorf Astoria New York, a Hilton hotel, is currently undergoing a multi-year renovation, which is set to feature restored public and event spaces, 350 new guest rooms and suites and 350 residences. The hotel is also set to restore its historic items, such as the Cole Porter piano, the John F. Kennedy rocking chair and the World’s Fair Clock Tower.

The Algonquin Hotel

The Algonquin Hotel, Autograph Collection by Marriott, is located on 44th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues. The hotel was opened in 1902 when a single room cost $2 dollars a night. Frank Case, the hotel’s first general manager, eventually bought the hotel and continued to run it until his death in 1946. In 1923, the hotel got its first resident cat, a tradition that continues today. From 1919 until 1929, the hotel served as a lunch spot for the Algonquin Round Table, a group of New York writers, critics and actors. Notable members included Harold Ross (The New Yorker editor), George Kaufman (playwright and director), Alexander Woollcott (critic and journalist) and Brock Pemberton (Broadway producer). The round table group gathered in the Pergola Room, now called the Oak Room, a legendary cabaret nightclub.

St. Regis New York

In 1904, the St. Regis New York was founded by John Jacob Astor IV, and in 1912, the hotel was inherited by Astor’s son, Victor Astor, after his untimely death during the sinking of the Titanic. St. Regis New York, now a Marriott property, overlooks Fifth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, and it was declared a New York City Landmark in 1988. From the richly decorated rooms and designer suites to the rooftop ballroom, every element of this flagship St. Regis property was carefully considered. Don’t miss the iconic King Cole Bar where bartender Fernand Petiot invented the nation’s first modern Bloody Mary in 1934, just a year after Prohibition ended. The Ritz-Carlton New York opened in 1911 and was the first of the brand to operate in the United States. According to the New Yorker, the Ritz-Carlton’s head chef, Louis Diat, invented vichyssoise during the summer of 1917. The original recipe was published in Diat’s book titled Cooking a La Ritz. Now, the 253-room Ritz-Carlton New York, Central Park is a Forbes Five-Star and AAA Five Diamond Hotel. Located in Midtown Manhattan, the hotel features dining spots like Contour, a gastro lounge and the Ritz-Carlton Club® Lounge.

Sherry-Netherland Hotel

Since opening in 1927, the Sherry-Netherland is located on the corner of Fifth Avenue and 59th Street at the entrance to Central Park. This classic New York City hotel was developed by Louis Sherry and Lucius Boomer and designed by Schultze & Weaver in a neo-Romanesque and Renaissance style. All accommodations feature high ceilings, marble bathrooms, with some featuring the original pedestal sinks with silver-plated faucets from the 1920s. Harry Cipriani, the hotel’s restaurant is a near duplicate of the famed Harry’s Bar in Venice, which re-opened in May 2007 after a $3 million renovation. The mural on the lobby’s ceiling was inspired by Raphael’s frescoes, the Loggetta of Cardinal Bibbiena, in the Vatican Palace. In 1989, the hotel was featured in the film New York Stories as the location for Francis Ford Coppola’s Life Without Zoe.

The New York EDITION, located on Madison Avenue in Manhattan’s Flatiron District, is situated in the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company Tower from 1909. The hotel features luxury boutique accommodations with 273 guest rooms and suites with excellent views of Madison Square Park and the Empire State Building. The Clocktower, a Michelin-starred restaurant by Chef Jason Atherton, can be found on the hotel’s second floor. The menu features modern cuisine with British influences.

It’s a time to honor the sun gods and celebrate the year’s good harvest with friends, family, food, drinks and entertainment. Classic festival dishes include grilled sardines, grilled spare ribs, pork sandwiches, traditional soups and stews and plenty of port wine and Super Bock beer. The first evening of the festival usually includes a nice meal at home or at a restaurant. Be sure to book a table well in advance, since the festival is known to draw large crowds. Then, a spectacular fireworks display lights up the sky at midnight from the D. Luis Bridge. Free live music, including Fado, jazz and rock, can be heard throughout the city. Don’t forget your little plastic hammer, which festival goers use to lightly tap each other on the head.

Festival do Marisco in Olhão takes place in the municipal garden area along the banks of the Rio Formosa. This Portuguese food festival mixes live music and food to create one huge community celebration. In 2021, Festival Nacional de Gastronomia will celebrate its 40th anniversary. The Best Food Festivals in France

Fête de la Truffe

Fête de la Truffe is hosted by Sarlat-la-Canéda, a medieval town located in southwest France, and the Black Périgord Truffle Producers’ Group. A truffle, sometimes referred to as a black diamond because of its high value, is a type of fungus that grows in regions throughout France. This event celebrates the truffle’s rich flavor and its influence on local cuisine. In addition to sampling truffles, festival goers can learn how to hunt and identify them, meet local truffle-growers and buy fresh truffles and truffle-based products.

This weekend-long event also features a cooking competition for students taking a vocational baccalaureate with the cookery option or a BTS (HND equivalent) at apprentice training centers in France. Eight finalists are selected to prepare two dishes using foie gras and black Périgord truffle, and the winner is presented with the prestigues Jean Rougié Award.

Organized by Bieronomy et l’Agence Tintamarre, in partnership with Le Petit Bulletin Lyon, the Lyon Bière Festival has established itself as an essential gathering for beer connoisseurs in France and Europe. Attendees have the chance to sample a wide variety of craft beers and ciders. Brew masters are available to answer questions about the brewing process, new trends and food pairings. With more than 100 breweries in attendance, the event features beer from France, Czech Republic, Romania, Poland, Slovenia, Belgium and England, among others. The event is held at La Sucrière, a large building dedicated to contemporary art located in Lyon’s 2nd arrondissement.

Fête de la Coquille Saint-Jacques

Thousands of people gather in the Côtes-d’Armor region of France each year to honor the most elegant shellfish, the scallop, also known as the crown jewel of St-Brieuc Bay. Located in northern Brittany, the fishing ports of Erquy, Saint-Quay-Portrieux and Paimpol take turns each year hosting the Fête de la Coquille Saint-Jacques. The event marks the closing of an intense 6-month fishing season, which restricts fishing to 45 minutes twice a week to protect the species.

This two day event offers visitors the chance to sample a wide variety of scallop-inspired recipes at local restaurants and food stalls set-up near the port. Fête de la Coquille Saint-Jacques also features specialty food vendors, wine and entertainment. Don’t miss the parade featuring the Knights of the Scallop. Visitors can even follow the trawlers out to sea as they search for the very last scallops of the season. Scallops are available for purchase, either fresh in their shells or ready-to-eat.

Bordeaux Fête le Vin

For four days, Bordeaux hosts one of the country’s biggest wine-themed events of the year. This event may not be a French food festival exactly, but there are plenty of food samples to accompany the wine tasting. More than 1,200 winemakers gather in Bordeaux to celebrate the fruits of their labor at the Bordeaux Fête le Vin. Attendees can learn, taste and purchase some of the best red wines available in France. The Tasting Pass comes with a wine glass, around-the-neck glass holder, wine samples and access to one wine tasting workshop at the Pavillon de l’Ecole du Vin de Bordeaux. In addition to wine, the festival features food stands, entertainment and fireworks. The event also includes the Tall Ships Regatta, a race that draws large sailing ships to port on the Garonne River in the heart of Bordeaux.

Les Étoiles de Mougins
Location: Mougins
Month: June
Mougins, a village located near the French Riviera, organizes an annual international festival dedicated to gastronomy. Launched in 2006 as a tribute to Roger Vergé, the chef at Moulin de Mougins, the event draws more than 25,000 attendees each year. For three days, a hundred chefs gather at the event to share their skills and passion with the public. The event also features cooking lessons, demonstrations and competitions. One day is dedicated to families with special food-themed activities and workshops designed just for children.

Fête du Ventre et de la Gastronomie Normande
Location: Rouen
Month: October
Since in 1935, Rouen’s Fête du Ventre et de la Gastronomie Normande, or Festival of the Stomach and Norman Gastronomy, has been a popular food event in northern France. Set in the historic town center, this Rouen food festival is centered around the Place du Vieux Marché and Rue Rollon. For two days, crowds gather to celebrate the region’s top chefs, artisans and local food producers. Visitors can sample a wide range of locally farmed and produced foods, such as apples, cheeses, ciders, meats, dairy products, jams and sweet treats. Many locals wear traditional costumes to honor Normandy’s heritage.

Fête Du Piment
Location: Espelette
Month: October
Each year, the Basque village of Espelette hosts a festival that marks the end of the pepper harvest. According to Anglet’s tourist office, peppers were first brought to this region by a Basque navigator sailing with Christopher Columbus around 1650. Since then, peppers have been a celebrated staple in many local dishes. Once picked, the peppers are hung along houses to dry creating a beautiful backdrop for the event. Attendees can purchase peppers, in addition to other regionally produced foods. Food festival activities include dance performances, traditional music, a parade and pelota games.

Lyon Street Food Festival
Location: Lyon
Month: October
The Lyon Street Food Festival is a recent addition to the French food festival calendar. Since 2016, this four-day party attracts thousands of attendees, as well as hundreds of chefs from all over France and Europe. The event features pop-up restaurants, food trucks, outdoor bars, live music and free cooking workshops. Regional chefs prepare savory food samples, while discussing cooking techniques with hungry audiences. The event takes place at the Old Fagor-Brandt Factories in Lyon’s 7th arrondissement.

Les Sarmentelles
Location: Beaujeu
Month: November
Les Sarmentelles is a wine festival held in Beaujeu, a village located in eastern France near the city of Mâcon. The event celebrates the limited edition release of that year’s Beaujolais Nouveau. Available to the public for the first time each year on the third Thursday in November, this red wine is made using Gamay grapes and is only fermented for a few weeks before it is consumed. For decades, this five-day French wine festival has featured tastings, dinners, live music, dance performances and art markets. Visitors can also book trips to the local vineyards and meet the winemakers.
